The region in Central Anatolia known as Cappadocia is rich in history, being the original home of the ancient Hittite culture. After the fall of the Hittite empire around 1750 BC, Cappadocia was ruled by various invading factions, such as the Phrygians. The Persians came to power in the mid 6th century BC and ruled for over 200 years. It was the Persian word Katpatuka or "land of the well bred horses" that eventually came to identify the region.

Things to do in Cappadocia:
- Hiking in the different valleys of the area, such as Love Valley, White Valley and the stunning Red and Rose Valleys.
- Visit the Göreme Open Air Museum and the Zelve Open Air Museum.
- Explore the underground cities of the area, of which the biggest ones at Derinkuyu and Kaymakli are the most famous.
- Drift over the breathtaking landscapes of Cappadocia in a hot air balloon.
- Snowshoeing in the valleys of Cappadocia and skiing on the Erciyes Mountain (near Kayseri) in wintertime.
